You wouldn’t believe how natural and easy this all went.
I was more nervous about finding parking near the restaurant than going on a first date with this guy. Maybe this could be from just going through the first-date-nerves last Saturday…or maybe the Powers that Be have tuned the energies of the world to make things work out.
I didn’t worry about flowers, topics of conversation, or how I looked. It was weird; I was confident and comfortable for no good reason.
Anyway, the bastard shows up nearly an hour late because of traffic. He calls me as he stands in front of the restaurant, I’m standing on the corner 20 meters away…he has Pete, his dog, and he’s standing there, and I just know things will go well. I kind of want to run toward him and hug him (maybe make out, who knows, I don’t plan things out like that), hug his dog, and simply be near him. What do I do? Still on the phone I make a dumb joke that I don’t want to meet him any more, and he knows that I’m watching him…which turns out to be more creepy than funny. He turns left and sees me, then I walk toward him. We were both relieved…about so many things, which is obvious, but don’t share what we’re relieved about. It somehow felt like we were just old friends going out for breakfast at lunchtime. We sit on the patio, Pete is tied to the railing, and we start talking about stuff I can’t really remember. And his eyes! They’re this blue ring and green ring, but like exploding glass. He’s got these lines set around his eyes that are joyful and sincere. When he smiles, it pulla you in and surrounds you. And he’s actually funny, actually smart, and actually living well. You simply want to be in his presence, next to him, silent in a car or walking out with his dog.
And that’s my perception from my one date. But, you know these things after an hour with him. If we don’t actually date…I know we’ll hang out and be regular friends. He’s kind of like a buddy. Someone you just want to call up and hang out with.
He lives in Portland. As fate would have it, I will be visiting Portland this weekend for other reasons.
This was his latest text as he’s driving from Seattle to Portland:
148 miles! Hell. Sleep well handsome man!
They don’t make ‘em like him every day.
